The Student Experience
I was paired with Dr. Peter Schauer '71, the division chief of medical oncology at Hartford Hospital. I arrived at the Helen and Harry Jack Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital extremely early and sat in the patients' waiting room. When the cancer center opened, Dr. Schauer greeted me with a most warm welcome. We introduced ourselves, and I accompanied him on his hospital rounds. I felt extremely honored to have him as my mentor.
When we visited patients, Dr. Schauer explained everything he was doing. I was inspired by his kind and gentle words. Every patient he talked with loved him. I spent two full days with Dr. Schauer, accompanying him on hospital rounds as well as seeing patients in his office. This experience has forever touched my heart, and has sparked a passion that I intend to follow as my career path.
I was also impressed with the fact that Dr. Schauer treated me as an equal. Today many physicians are extremely busy and so understaffed that they cannot take time out of their day for student fellowships. I cannot adequately express my gratitude for his time, and I hope he knows what a difference he has made in my life.
I come from a single-parent household and have a younger brother at home. Without alumni donations I would not be able to afford school. Every gift helps, and you have no idea how different my life would be without this opportunity.
I would like to thank all of the alumni who donate their time and money to the University; all of their help and contributions have made it possible for me to pursue a better life for myself through education.

"I was honored when I heard that I had been chosen to receive the McGowan Scholarship . . . . Without the scholarship, I would have had a hard time paying for school. I am thankful for the scholarship every day.
"It not only helped me financially, but it also gave me the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Fourth Annual William G. McGowan Forum on Communications, Technology, and Government. The trip enabled me to participate in a prestigious forum with other top students, to broaden my network, and to explore the nation's capital. It is an experience that I will never forget."

The biggest surprise has been my classes I enjoy them so much more than I did in high school. The professors are much more interesting and enthusiastic about what they are teaching.
I enjoy working at the telefund because it has a nice atmosphere and the people that I work with are friendly and fun to talk to. More importantly, I believe in what we are accomplishing. I have learned a lot about the University and have heard some great stories from the alumni that I have talked to.
I believe alumni should give back because they enjoyed their time here. I hope they realize that by financially supporting the University they are providing current students with the opportunity of a private education and the college experience similar to what they had.
I would like to thank the alumni who have made a gift to the University. Alumni support is really important to every student.

Now in my junior year, my major is drawing and my minor is painting. The opportunity to work at the Greater Hartford Magnet School arose, and I jumped at it. I love sharing my enthusiasm for art with young children. I am amazed at how smart they are it's much more than the arts and crafts I did. The experience is great for me because I have wanted to be an art teacher since I was in first grade.
I am in awe of my professors and my fellow art classmates I believe they are some of the most talented in the country. Harriet Caldwell has been especially important in my growth as an artist. She isn't your traditional teacher I can talk to her about anything and she is very open-minded. She tells me in a kind and straightforward way what I need to do better and how I can improve myself.
The classes are enriching and stimulating. Each class is an achievement. When I have to study an area that I am not comfortable with, it enables me to conquer my fears and push myself, like the sculpting class when I overcame my fear of using the woodshop cutting machine or began welding. I am also increasing the skills I have. This semester I am taking a nontraditional materials course. It has made me think outside the box about the abstract and beyond the principle of art.
I am thankful for so many things. My mom has made me the person I am, and she makes me want to be the best person I can be. I am also thankful for the Ison Scholarship. Without financial aid, my single mother would not be able to pay the full tuition and room/board, as I have another sister in college and two younger sisters. I hope other alumni will continue to support scholarships because they really do make dreams come true.

Esther Kim '09 Esther Kim, who majored in finance and economics, was named the fourth annual William G. McGowan Scholar. A member of the Barney Leadership Council, the honor society, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, Esther spent last summer as an intern at UnitedHealth Group and will started working there full time upon graduation. She attributes the wonderful launch of her career to opportunities offered at the Barney School.

Eric Williams '11 I chose to attend the University because I wanted to major in cinema, but I did not want to live too far away from my home town, East Lyme. I also like the size and atmosphere of the campus. It's not too large but not too small either, and it had cinema, my major.

Mary-Selvi Ingoldsby '10 I was born in India but I grew up in Torrington, Conn. I fell in love with the University of Hartford in high school after I attended a six-week art course. I was thrilled when I was accepted because it was my first choice.
