Cheryl Wheeler, who makes an audience laugh one moment and has them crying at a soulful ballad the next, will perform in the University of Hartford’s MUSIC for a CHANGE benefit concert series. The show will be held on
Friday, Dec.3, at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Wilde Auditorium, Harry Jack Gray Center, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford. Tickets are $20.
The University of Hartford, in cooperation with WWUH radio (91.3 FM), has created a way to use music to help its Hartford-area neighbors. The MUSIC for a CHANGE benefit concert series, launched in the spring of 2000, has raised more than $30,000 for greater Hartford charities and nonprofit organizations. Proceeds from this show will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut.
Wheeler’s songs are often emotional portraits of people, leaving you with the impression that you know the character. When performing her serious songs, she guides the audience into the lyrics. However, Wheeler also writes humorous songs, including
Estate Sale and
Cow Pattern Clothes.
Since 1986, she has released 10 albums, most recently,
Different Stripe (Essential Recordings, 2003).
The Boston Globe described Wheeler as “[a] brilliant iconoclastic songwriter … In between sharp-tongued musings and fiery topical ditties, she sings the warm, incisive ballads that keep her among the most enduring stars on the folk circuit.”
Performing with Wheeler will be Kenny White, who has made a name for himself writing radio and television commercials and music for films, as well as in folk music circles. In 2002, White released his debut CD,
Uninvited Guest, and followed that with
Symphony in 16 Bars, released in August of this year. “Whites impressionistic songs grow on you over time, as his images evoke your own memories and associations, and the subtly insistent grooves and instrumental textures stay with you well after the record stops spinning,” wrote
Sing Out! folk magazine.
