A Message From President Walter Harrison
April 17, 2007
To Members of the University Community:
On Monday, April 16, the Virginia Tech campus experienced an unspeakably tragic event, a deadly assault that has shocked all of us throughout the United States and the world. This horrible event is the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States.
This tragedy, as well as other recent violent events at universities around the world, is particularly shattering to those of us in the higher education community. Universities should be open and caring communities of scholars and learners, dedicated to an exchange of ideas and the emotional and educational growth of our students. We are, at this university and at all universities around the world, planting the seeds of hope for a better world in the future. In light of this tragic event, we must rededicate ourselves to this mission.
Yesterday's event was both senseless and deeply shattering. Please join me in including the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Virginia Tech, as well as the families and friends of all of the victims, in your thoughts and prayers.
As we think of this tragic event and try to put it in perspective, let us again be grateful for the special privilege of being in an environment that is dedicated to developing the best in the human condition.
Sincerely,
Walter Harrison
President
