About

Our Purpose

To launch conversations, expand creative thinking, and kindle engagement with our community through the lens of contemporary art

Our Values

The Next Generation: As teaching galleries, we prioritize the growth and empowerment of our students by creating opportunities for learning directly from art and artists.

Embodied Learning: Our exhibitions create environments that spark curiosity, sustained engagement, and knowledge production by foregrounding the materiality and full sensory effects of contemporary art.

Civic Engagement: In our exhibitions and programming, we model the shared responsibility of open, civic discourse to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable society.

Belonging: We are free and open to the public—a hub for everyone in the community to gather, learn, and imagine through art.

Multidisciplinary: Contemporary art takes multiple forms, and we honor a balance between traditional and experimental modes of making.

Our Collection

The HAS Galleries steward over 2,000 objects that make up the University of Hartford and the Hartford Art School Endowment, Inc. art collections, consisting primarily of works on paper along with painting and sculpture, that reflect the artistic disciplines taught at the Hartford Art School. From Rembrandt to Helen Frankenthaler, strengths of the collection include Early Modern European and twentieth-century American printmaking traditions. In addition to gifts by friends of the University, the collection grows each year through annual programming, such as the Hartford Art School Print Workshop and the Alexander A. Goldfarb Juried Student Exhibition, which awards two purchase prizes to students.
In 2015, the Helen S. Kaman Print Study Center was established as a space to educate and engage the community through access to the collection. Thanks to a gift from the Charles H. Kaman Charitable Foundation, a climate-controlled space was built for students, faculty, and community members to study original works of art by research appointment or class visit.
In 2023, we completed a Collections Stewardship Assessment, sponsored by the American Alliance of Museums, in order to make the entirety of the collection more accessible for study and exhibition. As we undertake a full inventory and rehousing project, the community is invited to explore highlights from the collection on our database.

Art on Campus

The Art on Campus program enhances public spaces on the University of Hartford campus through pop-up exhibitions, sited sculpture, and small displays.
Recent examples of Art on Campus exhibitions include Professor Kat Owens’ enormous collage made of plastic pollution, Entangled and Ingested: Sperm Whale, hung in Harrison Library in 2022; original sketches from Liana Finck’s graphic novel Let There Be Light: The Story of Her Creation, installed in the Maurice Greenberg Center in 2023 on the occasion Finck’s receipt of the Edward Lewis Wallant Award; and an collaboration with the Amplifying Indigenous Voices affinity group to showcase artwork by Indigenous students and staff at the University.
Launched in 2023 by Art on Campus, ToPraxis is a student-driven exhibition series that welcomes submissions from University of Hartford students wishing to display their work to the wider campus community. Submissions are invited at the start of each semester. For more information, including the application, please download this form and submit it to ccushman@hartford.edu.
Certain artworks in the collection are available for display in offices and public spaces on campus. If you are interested in artwork for your space, please contact Gallery Director Carrie Cushman.
