Miss Holtshouser is currently a Second-year Master’s student studying trumpet performance at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. She is the Graduate Trumpet Studio Assistant for Professor of Trumpet Phil Snedecor, former principal of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

She is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina where she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelors in Music Performance as well as a Bachelors in Media Communications.

While at Chapel Hill, she was Principal trumpet in the Symphony Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, the Final Five Brass Quintet, and was trumpet section captain of the UNC Marching Tar Heels. She has premiered works with these groups, including award winning film composer Christian Kolo’s “River Runs Silver” at CBDNA in 2018.

Lauren has studied and performed a wide range of music from large and chamber ensembles to pit orchestras to British style brass bands. In 2016 and 2017 she was Principal Cornet and a featured soloist in the Watson Brass Band, located in Raleigh, North Carolina. She also led this group as Principal to the National American Brass Band Association Competition in Indiana, where they placed 2nd in the collegiate division. The next year she was a member of the Watson Brass Band Quintet and won the young brass chamber ensemble division at NABBA in 2017. She has had various private instructors including Lisa Burn, James Ketch, and Tim Hudson.

Lauren has also taught aspiring students in the Chapel Hill area, specifically to prepare them for All District auditions in the early spring months. She is able to teach all ages of trumpet students, even if they have never touched a trumpet before. 

While at the Hartt School of Music; Lauren won the Paranov Concerto Competition allowing her to perform as a soloist with the Hartt Wind Ensemble. She traveled to The National Trumpet Competition this past April to compete with the Hartt Trumpet Ensemble. She and the Hartt Brass Quintet won second place in the Hartt Chamber Music Competition in May of 2022, and she recently recorded a NAXOs recording with the Hartt Wind Ensemble for Jess Turner’s Symphony “If I am to Leave” as a featured flugelhorn soloist.

Teaching Philosophy:

It is my goal to help young musicians develop their musical, technical, and performance skills as they study trumpet, so that they may acquire an appreciation and love for music throughout their lives.
