"Stop the Bleed" Workshops Train Nearly 50 Students

Nearly 50 University of Hartford students are feeling more prepared to save a life, following “Stop the Bleed” workshops held by the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions on Oct. 18.

ENHP partnered with the national Stop the Bleed organization to show students how to assist someone who is bleeding significantly from an injury. Someone who is severely bleeding can bleed to death in as little as 5 minutes. With three quick actions, the bleed can be controlled and a life can be saved.

Susan Jones, simulation lab learning specialist within the nursing department of ENHP, spoke with NBC CT about why the training is important and the various scenarios in which it can be essential. Students who participated had the opportunity to practice using faux limbs, real tourniquets, gauze, and other supplies.

The hands-on learning will allow students to feel more confident if they ever find themselves in an urgent situation, Jones told the TV station. Because a significant bleed can take a drastic turn so quickly, trained bystanders can take life-saving action while emergency vehicles are on their way, she added.

Frank Hursey ’77, inventor of the QuikClot blood-clotting product used across the world, also spoke to student participants before the training began.
