Fall 2022 and Winter 2023 Blackboard Courses to be Archived on March 18

As part of our regular maintenance schedule, on Monday, March 18, 2024, all Fall 2022 and Winter 2023 Blackboard courses will be removed from active status on Blackboard. Instructors, as well as students, will no longer have access to them after this date. However, backups were created of the content for these courses, so course content can always be brought back should the need arise by filling out the Archive Request Form.

Grades and other student-related data are not preserved in the backups so faculty should plan to print out or export any grades recorded in Blackboard’s Online Gradebook prior to March 18. To download grades from Blackboard, go to Control Center > Full Grade Center > Work Offline > Download. Instructors who would like permanent records of online discussions (forums), blogs, wikis, journals, submitted assignments, or Collaborate recordings should plan to print these out or download them to their computers. If there is a reason for keeping a course active on Blackboard past this date (e.g., accreditation, a student with an incomplete or a continuing online discussion), please let Academic Technology know by March 18.

For FERPA compliance, all Collaborate recordings from Fall 2022 and Winter 2023 will also be removed. Instructors who wish to maintain copies of any recordings that do not contain student input or identifying information should download them before March 18 using these instructions.

Keeping all Blackboard courses active indefinitely can impact Blackboard’s performance. University guidelines for Blackboard state that instructors are granted access to one full year’s set of all their Blackboard courses. Course sites older than one year which are no longer used by instructors will be deactivated and removed from Blackboard approximately one year after the term in which they were used has ended.

Instructors with questions about Blackboard course deactivation or who would like assistance using Blackboard are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Technology, Teaching, and Learning at 860.768.4661 or actech@hartford.edu.
