Closing the Loop: Sharing our SoTL with a Scholarly Audience

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is both intensely personal, being grounded in our own teaching practices, and necessarily public as an important contribution to the improvement of higher education. In this virtual interactive workshop, we will consider our options for sharing SoTL with others, including conference presentations, disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals, and alternative outlets. We will also address our fears about rigor and significance by investigating alternatives to traditional citation measures. Participants will leave the session with personalized practical suggestions for sharing their SoTL with a scholarly audience.

Hillary H. Steiner, PhD, is the associate director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and Professor of Educational Psychology in the Department of Psychological Science at Kennesaw State University. At KSU she has taught introductory and educational psychology, a variety of first-year seminars, and graduate courses on the high-school to college transition in face-to-face hybrid, and online formats. Her current research and professional interests focus on SoTL methodology, support and advocacy, and the application of the science of learning to higher education. Recently, she co-created Hopscotch 4-SoTL a model and web tool that supports the development of thorough research designs for SoTL projects. Hillary is a recipient of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents' SoTL Award and has been active in professional service at the international, national and local level, serving as a Vice President of ISSOTL (US Region), Conference Chair of the SoTL Summit, Program Chair for ISSOTL19, and the founder and past chair of the SoTL Special Interest Group of the POD Network in Higher Education.
