Hillyer's Bilal Sekou Shares Expertise in Media Interviews

You may have heard or read commentary from Hillyer College Associate Professor of Political Science Bilal Sekou this month in some of Connecticut’s top media outlets.

He appeared in a live segment on FOX61 on Feb. 8, about the start of Black History Month, also known as Freedom Day. Sekou explained that on Feb. 1, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was signed by President Lincoln. Sekou talked about Black History Month being a great opportunity for young people to learn about the many contributions that individuals of African descent have made all over the world.

Sekou offered commentary in a Feb. 12, CT Insider article titled, Critics question independence, thoroughness of  probe into CT State Police fake ticket data scandal. His comments focused on having people outside of law enforcement review the findings of the report, and how it will be difficult for people to accept the report’s findings if they are questioning its legitimacy.

And on Feb. 21, Sekou appeared on WNPR’s The Wheelhouse to discuss how a candidate’s take on issues could push a person to change their vote, or sit it out altogether. Among the topics discussed is that Joe Biden is experiencing a decline in support among Black voters, when compared to the 2020 election.

Sekou also serves as chairman of Common Cause Connecticut, a nonprofit that lobbies for open, honest, and accountable government, voters’ rights, and election reform.
