Nigerian Artist Presents Lecture at Hartford Art School

Flyer

Dialogues about the relationship to art and design sound different depending upon where you are standing. Victor Ekpuk, a Nigerian artist based in the U.S., will lead a discussion at the Hartford Art School on March 25.

Ekpuk’s creative practice is inspired by African objects that incorporate both function and aesthetics. The artist will address his holistic approach to art and design that incorporates illustration, graphic design, textile design, painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. He also will discuss an African graphic communication system, nsibidi, which he uses to explore a diverse spectrum of meaning addressing historical narratives, the contemporary African diaspora, and humanity’s connection to the sacred.

Victor Ekpuk's presentation is entitled: "Art Is Design, Design Is Art." The Auerbach Visiting Artist Lecture Series began in November 2001 and is made possible by a gift from the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund of the Hartford Art School Endowment, Inc.

This free event is presented by the Hartford Art School’s art history department on March 25, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and held in Wilde Auditorium.
