Scam Alert Affecting Students and Families at Area Colleges

UHart's Department of Public Safety has been advised of a scam/fraud attempt that has occurred at some colleges in Connecticut. The fraud suspects contact parents and family members of students identifying themselves as actual members of campus police and public safety departments. The suspects advise the families that their student has been arrested and demand that money be sent via Venmo, Paypal, or cash cards for a bond.

If someone is arrested and a bond is required before they can be released, payment must be done in person and never by an online payment service or pre-paid cash cards. If anyone contacts you claiming to be from the Department of Public Safety demanding payment, or that you find suspicious in any way, hang up and dial 860.768.7985 to speak with a Public Safety dispatcher.

This is a common scam that is also known as the Grandkid and Family Scam

If you believe that someone may have attempted to scam you, you can register a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
