The University of Hartford joins with other institutions of higher education and people across the country to celebrate Juneteenth.
Observed on June 19, Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day in 1865—nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation—when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas received the news from Union army troops that they were finally free. On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed into law a bill making Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday.
