Exciting Semester Long Experiential Learning Opportunity

Are you ready to take your learning beyond the classroom and dive into a real-world, hands-on project? We’re thrilled to announce an incredible experiential learning opportunity that counts for 3 course credits!

This project, in partnership with Berkley Financial Specialists, a member company of W. R. Berkley Corporation—a leading provider of insurance and risk management solutions—offers students the chance to work on AI Risk Summary project:

Berkley Financial Specialists senior leaders and the Berkley Crime underwriting team are looking to train an AI (Artificial Intelligence) model which will combine a summary/analysis of domestic Commercial Crime accounts along with a Risk Grade based on a pre-defined set of criteria. Output (AIRS) would include a Risk Grade (score) and summary/analysis documentation that would be used by underwriters when assessing risk and saved to the underwriting file.  Advanced outcomes include linking this AI model (specifically the Risk Grade) to Target Pricing Models to make pricing recommendations, scaling the model to accommodate additional products, and/or linking the model to in-house underwriting/policy administration systems.  Today, underwriters are manually reviewing a combination of materials provided by the Broker at the time of submission along with publicly available information to underwrite (assess risk) the account, determine the Risk Grade (score), and document underwriting files.  AIRS will incorporate significant efficiency into the underwriting process resulting in creation of capacity within existing resources which supports future growth of Berkley Financial Specialists/Berkley Crime without incurring additional expense.

Students will be given access to the Berkley network, (including Microsoft Azure), submission data (internal and external sources) and direction on application of proprietary Risk Grade rules.  The students will train the AI model to develop a tool (AIRS) which produces consistent and reliable output to be used by underwriters when assessing risk and saved to the underwriting file.  Specific software and technical tools that will be required/available for this project include a “sandboxed” version Microsoft Azure Open AI and other applications within the Microsoft suite of products that are all unique to the Berkley network.  Skill requirements include proficiency in AI modeling, data analytics, change management, and general business acumen.  Additionally, competencies in independent problem-solving, innovative thought, and curiosity will be important for the success of this initiative.

You’ll gain hands-on experience, develop professional connections, and apply your skills in a real-world corporate environment.

Not only will this experience strengthen your resume, but it could also open doors to future career opportunities within W.R Berkley and the broader industry.

Spaces are limited, so don’t miss this chance to engage in meaningful work, expand your network, and make a real impact!
