NSF Grant Workshop for Faculty

The Office of Sponsored Programs is hosting a National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant Writing Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12:30 p.m.–2 p.m. in Auerbach 424.

Registration is not required! Any faculty member interested in learning more about applying to NSF for grant funding regardless of experience level is encouraged to attend.

This session, facilitated by Gordon Snyder, will provide an overview of writing competitive NSF proposals. Attendees will learn to navigate NSF's two merit review criteria: Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts. The workshop will cover practical elements including understanding reviewer expectations, proposal formatting requirements, project evaluation planning, and the importance of early preparation through program officer consultation. Participants will engage in an interactive exercise involving a mock review process to evaluate a sample proposal. By the end of the session, participants will have actionable strategies to improve their proposal writing skills and increase their chances of securing NSF funding.

Gordon Snyder is a former NSF Centers of Excellence Director/Co-Director, multiple NSF project PI, and frequent review panelist. With over 40 years in STEM education and recognition among the top 15 STEM faculty in the US by Microsoft and AACC, he understands the funding landscape from both applicant and reviewer perspectives. Currently serving as external evaluator for multiple NSF programs while teaching part-time and mentoring institutions nationwide, Gordon provides participants with practical, insider knowledge for crafting competitive proposals that effectively address NSF's Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts criteria.
