To our graduating students, the UHart community is proud of you and all of your accomplishments.

You deserve a day to celebrate with your family—we thought we'd give you two!

The University of Hartford is honoring the Class of 2020 with two Commencement celebrations: a tribute video that was shared with all seniors on the original Commencement 2020 date of May 15, and an in-person ceremony to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at noon at downtown Hartford's XL Center.

Watch our video tribute!

Celebrate at home!

Even though our original Commencement plans have changed, we still want to give our graduates the celebration they deserve this spring and summer.

Here are a few helpful tips for how you can make your graduate feel extra special:

decorate your front door

Do this on your own as a surprise for your graduate or work together to come up with a design and decorate as a family. Some themes could include:

  • Photos of the student on UHart campus and at UHart activities
  • Shout-outs for academic, club, and athletic achievements
  • UHart colors and décor with a big “Class of 2020” sign
Put up a Lawn sign

Put a sign on your front lawn, balcony, or in a window inviting passing cars to honk to celebrate your student's achievement. A sign that reads “NAME is graduating today—honk to say congrats!” will have passersby joining in the festivities all day long.

Host a Zoom Party

Party with friends and family virtually using Zoom—it’s free and anyone with a phone or computer can join in. Here are a few fun UHart backgrounds you can use!

Send mail. yes, students still like receiving cards in the mail!

Invite friends and family to mail congratulatory cards, notes with advice on post-graduation life, and tips on how to succeed in the workplace. Save all the cards and present (or mail) them to the graduate to be opened on May 15.

Give a toast!

Whether you are celebrating virtually or in person, a toast is a great way to make graduates feel recognized for their hard work and achievements. Ask guests to prepare a few words beforehand and take turns sharing memories of the graduate.

In-Person Commencement Ceremony

Commencement 2020 will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at noon, at downtown Hartford's XL Center.

This one ceremony will bring together those who would have been recognized in May 2020 with our graduates eligible for our December 2020 Commencement.

For graduates, family, and friends unable to attend in person, we still want you to be a part of the celebration. We will be streaming the ceremony live that day and then offering it for on-demand viewing at your convenience in subsequent months. Most importantly, we will be reading the names of all eligible graduates, not just those who are in attendance that day.

Important Updates for Graduates

Looking Ahead to 2021

Commencement 2021 will take place on Saturday, May 15, at 11 a.m. (XL Center, downtown Hartford)

Cap and Gown

Students who placed their cap and gown orders for campus pickup in May can now have their regalia shipped to their home at no charge by following instructions here. Please be sure to keep it in a safe place until the rescheduled Dec. 15 ceremony.

For those who did not previously order their cap and gown, you may order online now.

Diplomas and Transcripts

Degrees will be awarded, degree completion will be indicated on transcripts, and complimentary unofficial transcripts will be mailed to graduates on a rolling basis between now and the end of summer. Due to circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we are unable to provide a specific date for any given student as to when this will take place. However, please be assured that school and college evaluators are working with the registrar's office as quickly as possible to award degrees.

Diplomas will follow in a separate mailing. A variety of factors will determine the mailing date for diplomas, most importantly when the campus will reopen for staff. Continuous updates will be posted throughout the summer on this Commencement website. Diplomas will carry either an official date of May 17, 2020, or August 15, 2020. The latter is an additional date added for this year only to accommodate students finishing up spring 2020 coursework during the summer.

If you need to verify completion of your degree for employment, advanced study, or any other reason prior to receiving your unofficial transcript, please email If you need to order an official transcript, you may do so online at

Diploma cases will not accompany the mailed diplomas but will be distributed at our in-person Commencement ceremony on Dec. 15 at downtown Hartford’s XL Center. Those unable to attend in person will be able to request that a diploma cover and official Commencement program be mailed to them following the ceremony. Watch for details in the fall.
