Why did you choose to attend the University of Hartford and how did your education here prepare you for your career in the Navy and beyond?

UHart is a place many of my family and professional colleagues attended. What was most favorable is that I saw the direction the university was headed with the campus updates. Being within the community and being moments from my residence, I foresaw a future where my family could potentially continue a legacy.  Additionally, my network has expanded and continues to be impactful from colleagues and professors within the UHart family.

Did you always know you wanted to serve? What are you most proud of when you think about what you accomplished as an officer in the U.S. Navy?

I had known I wanted to join since high school, as I was a sophomore when the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place. My desire began there as I wanted to give back to this country! I am grateful I joined and joyous that I can now bridge the gap of military and local communities showing a positive example of what military service can look like. Being a leader in the Navy as a Commissioned Officer has allowed me to lead from the front and be an empathetic leader, instilling some of the many values I have learned during my time at UHart.

This Veteran’s Day is particularly notable for members of our Navy, as the Navy is celebrating 250 years of service to our country. What is something you’d like to make sure all citizens know about the service and sacrifice of those who serve?

Military service is like nothing I have ever experienced. Individuals from all over the world join into service and no matter what our backgrounds or experiences, we become a family. We call each other whenever needed, no matter if we are near or far or whether we haven’t talked in a week or a year. Most times, our biological family may not be able to provide the support our military family provides. Sometimes, we just need a listening ear, a friendly smile, or just a friend we can count on.

What would you tell students who are considering serving our country or contemplating a career in the armed services/US Navy?

It is not an easy decision, but it is an honorable one and one that will impact you the rest of your lives. Our military is the best and no matter what branch you decide on, you will be entering into a world of unlimited opportunities. The military has so many possibilities and you are ultimately the decision maker on how you would like to see your career pan out. Whether it be for a few years or a lifetime career, you will not regret joining the service!
