Walter Gibson began on the path of his musical journey with singing in his church choir. He continued to expand his musical encounters through Grade School chorus, Junior High School chorus and High School band and chorus. After High School he auditioned to play in one of the US Army Bands. After audition acceptance, he enlisted in the US Army. At the completion of basic training he attended the US Naval School of Music and studied Tuba with Harold Honaker. He served as a Bandsman in the US Army, Second Armored Division during the Vietnam era. His work assignments in his band were as Tubist, Music Librarian and Choral Director. He formed a Recorder consort that won First Place in military chamber music recording competition.

After being honorably discharged from military service, he continued his musical studies at the Mannes College where he studied Tuba with Walter E. Sear and the Hartt School where he studied Tuba with Thompson Hanks and earned his Bachelor of Music Degree. At Hartt he also worked as the House Stage Manager and Performance Librarian/Curator of Musical Instruments for 40 years.

Since returning to Connecticut, he has been an active Tubist and has had the good fortune to perform with The New Britain Symphony Orchestra, The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, The Hartford Chamber Orchestra, The Hartford Symphony Orchestra, the Manchester Civic Orchestra, The Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra, The Fulton American Band, The Meriden Symphony Orchestra, The Wallingford Symphony Orchestra, The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Ethiopian Philharmonic, The Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, The Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra New England, The Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra and many chamber ensembles.

He is currently the Low Brass adjunct faculty member at The Central Connecticut State University and teaches low brass for the Hartt School Community Division.

My basic teaching philosophy is to tailor private lessons for each student based on their strengths, weaknesses, and individual musical interests and goals. This approach does not preclude the teaching of basic music rudiments.
