Caitlin Smallfield ‘17 a management major from New Zealand, got a taste of how an inspiring social enterprise operates through her internship at Newman’s Own Foundation. Caitlin, an academic standout and an America East All-Conference First Team Selection in soccer, met Newman’s Own president and CEO Bob Forrester ’66 during one of his campus visits (he is a former University men’s soccer player and University Regent). After discovering they had “a mutual love for food,” Caitlin decided to apply for a summer internship.

Caitlin worked with outside marketing agencies to develop product logos and she fielded questions about food allergies, natural ingredients and customer satisfaction.

The size and culture of the company has made the experience so much more meaningful. The small details and project management skills I’m learning from my co-workers and managers are just invaluable.

Her greatest learning experience so far has taken place on the road. She, Bob Forrester, and another intern were part of a group that attended a luncheon at the White House as part of Michelle Obama’s healthy luncheon initiative. The experience has her feeling more confident about her people skills and natural leadership abilities.
