Colby Carr ‘26, M’27, a double major in business analytics & managerial economics and finance, will earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees in four years through the Barney 3+1 accelerated program.
Colby developed an interest in economics in high school, and attending Barney deepened his passion for the subject through data analytics. Additionally, having two siblings and a mother who are UHart alumni encouraged him to explore the Barney 3+1 program.
He believes that UHart has prepared him for his field of study by teaching him to be a well-rounded individual. Colby emphasizes the importance of learning to advocate for himself and asking as many questions as possible. “It has reinforced the idea that you can learn anywhere you are,” he says. Barney specifically taught him the core principles of professionalism and effective communication in the business world.
This summer, Colby has been working in business insurance on the Property Line Management team at Travelers through the Product Management Development Program (PMDP). His favorite part of the experience has been winning his capstone project on agency economics with his team in front of the entire Product Management team, which he considers a great opportunity. He has also served as a Barney Ambassador since he arrived on campus and spent a year working in the Allan Center for Career and Professional Development.
After his internship in the PMDP at Travelers, Colby hopes to return full time while finishing his master's degree. “I can confidently say my summer with Travelers was the best summer of my life,” he emphasizes. “I would be doing a disservice not to shout out Ryan Jaswell, Niles Turner, and Jill Aurigemma for their contributions to Travelers and for making my summer so enjoyable. I learned so much this summer, and I would love to come back.”
Many individuals at UHart have impacted Colby’s experience. He credits Associate Professor of Economics Jane Horvath for her excellent support and willingness to discuss anything, saying, “It truly means a lot.” Khalia Whyte, who managed the Barney School’s undergraduate admission before stepping into her current role as UHart’s director of recruitment marketing, has also been a consistent support for him, even just to joke around, adding that “she is someone who makes UHart a great place.” Lastly, he praises his “wonderful mother,” Jennifer Carr, the associate director of donor relations in the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. “She is the most hardworking woman on the planet, has given me a great life through UHart, and has been the greatest support system possible. She always puts me first, and I will never be able to repay that.”
Outside of campus, Colby enjoys spending time with his family, describing his brother and sister as his two best friends. He also loves golfing with them and his friends, as well as traveling to new places. He expresses gratitude for having a supportive group of friends, no matter where they are.
