Inspired by the support of the Barney School of Business, Justin Beal ‘27 transformed a creative hobby into a growing business, all while developing the leadership and entrepreneurial skills to pursue even bigger goals.
From the moment Beal transferred to the University of Hartford, she knew she had found a community that would help her grow. Now a junior majoring in entrepreneurial studies with a minor in economics, she has transformed a personal passion into a thriving business while embracing every opportunity to develop as a student leader.
For Justin, entrepreneurship is about more than starting a business; it's about creating something meaningful. "I've always enjoyed creating things," she explains. "Entrepreneurship gave me the opportunity to combine creativity with business and learn how to turn ideas into reality."
That mindset led Justin to launch Origa-Me, her 3D origami business, where she designs and sells handcrafted creations. What started as a hobby became a business after an encouraging moment in one of her Barney marketing classes.
"During a class presentation, I shared one of my 3D origami creations," Justin recalls. "I offered it to my professor as a demonstration piece, but instead, he insisted on purchasing it. That moment gave me the confidence to believe that other people would see value in my work too. It became the foundation for my business."

The Barney School has been instrumental in helping Justin strengthen the entrepreneurial skills needed to grow her venture. Through coursework, she has learned to think creatively, solve problems, and apply business concepts to real-world situations. Outside the classroom, Barney's emphasis on professional development has helped her build her résumé, enhance her LinkedIn profile, sharpen her networking skills, and prepare for interviews.
Beyond academics, Justin has immersed herself in campus life, serving in leadership roles with the Red Caps Orientation Leaders, Barney Leadership Council, Student Government Association, Alpha Phi Omega, the Hartford Events & Activities Team, and several other organizations. These experiences have strengthened her communication, teamwork, and leadership skills while expanding her professional network.
"As a transfer student, I immediately felt welcomed at UHart," says Justin. "Getting involved on campus has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience because it's allowed me to build relationships, develop as a leader, and learn from people with different perspectives."
One of her biggest inspirations has been Barney Dean Aarti Ivanic, whose advice about balancing ambition with personal well-being left a lasting impression. "She encouraged students to take things one step at a time, stay organized, ask questions, and seek opportunities," says Justin. "That advice has helped shape how I approach both school and my business."
After graduation, Justin plans to continue expanding Origa-Me while developing another business idea already in the planning stages. She also hopes to gain professional experience in the corporate world before pursuing a master's degree and continuing her entrepreneurial journey.
