Jill Ernst ’21 believes UHart provided her with the support and foundation needed to achieve her next level of success in veterinary school in Dublin, Ireland, where she is studying conservation medicine with a focus on epidemiology. A UHart Honors Program alumna, Ernst graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in biology and was part of the pre-medical professions advising program. She says the Honors Program offered her challenging courses that formed the foundation of her academic success, while the faculty provided the support that allowed her to follow her dream of “making a difference.”

Ernst says of her UHart experience, “I was able to get the education necessary to form the foundation of my application to higher education.” In addition, Ernst enriched her college experience by seizing opportunities to participate in programs and activities such as research with faculty, study abroad, the Women’s Advancement Initiative’s Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program, and the Honors Program. “I was able to cement my interest in veterinary medicine and gain the experience necessary to stand out in applications,” she says.

The Honors Program is a unique opportunity for students, like Ernst, who push themselves academically. It is designed to align with each school and college so students are studying the topics that interest them, while also working toward graduating with honors. Participation includes exceptional courses, interdisciplinary seminars, faculty mentoring, and senior projects. “I didn't realize how much I loved epidemiology until I took an Honors course with Dr. Adam Silver, where I did a senior project on something I am passionate about.”

In preparation for her transition to veterinary school, Ernst interned at a veterinary clinic and worked at an animal shelter. She was also able to join Associate Professor of Biology Yingcui Li’s research team to investigate the genetic components of osteoarthritis. “There are so many hidden opportunities from the study abroad office to the center for student success, just waiting to help you be your best,” she says.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Ernst received much support and guidance from the UHart faculty. “I owe most of my success to my professors. From those who took a chance on me and let me work on their research, to faculty that opened my eyes about difference subjects, I am who I am because of their time and energy. I especially owe a lot to the teachers like Dr. Claudia Oakes that supported me into finding the perfect career and provided the resources and encouragement to start on that path.”

Ernst encourages new students to try everything! “College years only happen once. This is the time to have fun with your friends and live, but is also an important time to set up the rest of your life. Just because you aren't interested in something right now doesn't mean you won't be if you give it a try.”
