Yoonjeong Choi earned her Bachelor of Music degree at The Hartt School, majoring in Music Production & Technology. She and plans on continuing her studies at McGill University, focusing on sound recording.

While at Hartt, Choi took advantage of every opportunity that came her way.  She was part of the staff that oversaw UHart’s very own recording studio, and was able to record live performances in many of the concert venues at Hartt.  This gave her the opportunity to continue to improve her skills, while enhancing her portfolio.

After completing her sophomore year, Choi returned to Korea to work in another recording studio, giving her valuable experience and industry knowledge. During her four years at Hartt, Choi’s strong passion towards sound recording was shared with her classmates, friends, and professors.

Justin Kurtz, associate professor and chair of the music production & technology program, worked closely with Yoon and encouraged her to take the next step and apply to McGill. “I knew that McGill University has a great program for sound recording, but I never thought of going to a graduate school until junior year,” she says. “In the beginning of my senior year, Professor Justin Kurtz, recommended McGilll, as it would be the most suitable program to pursue a career in classical music recording for me.”

"Yoon was a model MPT student and a perfect example of the program’s philosophy combining musicianship training with the study of sound recording,” Kurtz says. “While a student, Yoon took full advantage of every opportunity to become a better recording engineer and musician. She gained valuable professional experience with the opportunity to engineer projects for the prestigious Naxos record label. McGill’s graduate program in sound recording is one of the best in the world and they are so lucky to have her. Yoon has a very bright future as a recording engineer and producer.”

What advice does she have to incoming students? Choi recommends “keep in touch with your professors and do not hesitate to ask for help.”
