Sabi Joseph '23 is a senior Accounting major in the Barney School of Business. She decided to pursue this field due to the various career opportunities. These include public accounting, management accounting, government accounting, and internal auditing. She has also discovered that she can specialize in specific areas such as tax accounting, forensic accounting, or international accounting, which will allow her to focus on her interests and career goals. She explains, “UHart gave me access to a robust alumni network as well as a multitude of professional opportunities, such as job search seminars and career fairs. These tools allowed me to investigate several career avenues, make connections with prospective employers, and get knowledge about the most recent developments in the field.”

Post-Graduation Plans

After graduation, Sabi will be heading to the University of Delaware for her Masters. Once she graduates, she will be heading back home to Long Island, where she will work at the Melville branch of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). “During my time at UHart, I was able to establish a number of valuable connections. I had the chance to meet a wide variety of individuals thanks to the courses, extracurricular activities, and internships that I participated in throughout my time at the university. These people included my fellow students, professors, professionals in my area of study, and graduates of the institution. Throughout the process of navigating my career and looking for new opportunities, these connections have proven to be extremely helpful resources for me. I have stayed in contact with a good number of these people via professional networking events, social media, and other avenues, and I have discovered that their observations and pieces of advice have been quite beneficial to the formation of my objectives and objectives for the future,” she says.

Internships

During her undergraduate experience, she completed two internships. One of them was at the well-known accounting company PwC, where she held the position of audit intern. During her time there, she was able to gain valuable experience in auditing financial statements, testing internal controls, and collaborating with other members of the team to successfully complete client engagements. Because of this internship, she was able to put into practice the information and abilities that she had gained in the classroom in real-world settings. Her second internship was with a program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for her to help her community by assisting low-income people and families with the preparation of their tax returns for free. During the time that she spent working for VITA, she was able to improve her ability to communicate and interact with others while also gaining valuable experience in the field of accounting and the preparation of tax returns. She was exposed to a wide variety of people via her employment and gained the ability to adjust to changing circumstances and cater to the requirements of each unique customer.

Education

Sabi believes “An outstanding education was offered to me by UHart, and the course offerings were geared toward assisting me in establishing a solid foundation of knowledge and abilities in the area of study that I had selected. When I had questions or needed help, the faculty members at UHart were always there to provide direction and assistance because they were highly knowledgeable in their respective fields. In addition, UHart provides students with a variety of chances to get hands-on experience via programs including internships and cooperative education. These experiences gave me the chance to apply what I had learned in the classroom to circumstances that I would encounter in the real world, and they assisted me in developing the practical skills that are essential to my professional success.”

Outside of the Classroom

Sabi also took advantage of a variety of Career and Professional Development programs with the Center for Student Success, such as career fairs, workshops, and networking events. These opportunities allowed her to connect with employers and professionals in the field, learn about job openings and industry trends, and improve her job search skills.

Sabi was very involved in the campus community. In her sophomore year, she had the honor of being the President of RHA, which was a great experience in leadership and event planning. The following year, she became the treasurer of Beta Alpha Psi, which is an organization dedicated to promoting the accounting profession and networking with professionals in the field. She also had the opportunity to join the Women's Club team, which was a fun way to stay active and meet new people. Finally, during her senior year, she was a member of the intramural volleyball team. She said they had a great season and even managed to go undefeated, culminating in a championship win that was a highlight of her time at UHart.

UHart Experience

“I was able to establish a solid foundation of knowledge and abilities in my area of study with the assistance of the rigorous and all-encompassing academic programs that were offered to me at UHart. The instructors at UHart have a wealth of information and years of professional experience, and they were always eager to give me direction and assistance in order to ensure my success. In addition, UHart allowed me to participate in extracurricular activities, take on leadership roles, and volunteer in the local community, all of which contributed to my personal and professional development. Because of these experiences, I was able to improve my interpersonal skills, get experience in leadership roles, and have a beneficial influence on the community in which I live. In general, the education I received at UHart combined with the experiences I got there have equipped me to explore a wide variety of options within my sector and beyond. I owe a lot of my success to the university since it gave me the education, training, and experiences I needed to be successful, and I am really thankful to UHart for the chances and support it has given me.”

Advice to Incoming Students

“I would like to share a piece of advice that has helped me throughout my academic journey. If you're struggling mentally and feel like you may not be able to complete your assignments on time, it's essential to reach out to your professors and let them know in advance. Most professors are understanding and willing to work with you to accommodate your needs. It's also important to remember that one exam or assignment does not define your academic success or your potential for future success. Don't be discouraged if you receive a lower grade than expected, as there are always opportunities to improve and learn from your mistakes. Lastly, it's essential to prioritize your mental health and well-being. Balancing schoolwork and other responsibilities can be stressful, so make sure to take breaks, practice self-care, and seek support if needed. Remember, grades are important, but your health and well-being are always a top priority."

The strong feeling of belonging I get from walking around campus is my favorite aspect about UHart. The small size of the university makes it simple to meet new people and form lasting friendships. I've learned a great deal from the instructors and staff, who have been nothing but helpful during my time here. The school grounds are very attractive and well-kept, making them ideal hangouts for students during free time or on pleasant days. I am very thankful for the excellent college experience I have had at UHart and for the lovely friends I have made.
