Psychology major Kicha Pinthiere ’23 describes her internship at Intensive Education Academy (IEA) in West Hartford as an amazing experience that reinforced her desire to study for an education specialist degree in school psychology at Georgia Southern University this fall. “I was able to shadow a school psychologist which strengthened my decision in the career path I wanted to take,” says Kicha. She started her UHart journey in Hillyer College before transitioning to the College of Arts and Sciences in her third year. Kicha will also graduate with a minor in teacher education from UHart’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, which prepares students for additional education study or for careers in psychology, advocacy, or social work.

Kicha says Hillyer College helped her adjust from high school to a college environment. “Hillyer was undoubtedly more demanding than high school, but with the additional help from encouraging professors, it inspired me to always do my best,” she says. “A smaller class size has several advantages, including the chance to get to know our classmates, the freedom to ask questions during lectures, and the opportunity to work in groups when necessary."

In her first year, Kicha says she was forced out of her comfort zone when she joined the UHA Steppaz (step team) which enabled her to represent UHart at other universities. She also joined UHart’s Black Student Union (BSU) which gave her the opportunity to meet other students and create bonds that didn’t just revolve around academics.

This year, Kicha is a resident assistant for one of the University’s residence halls. “My job focuses on performing as a peer educator and guide who builds relationships with residents, promotes a sense of connection through programming, and enforces University policies and procedures while acting as a role model.”

When asked what advice she would give to first-year students, she says to prioritize self-care. “It is crucial to concentrate on your studies, but you cannot do so if you put your health last. It's essential to get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise.” Kicha also advises students to use the resources that UHart offers including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Career Studio which helps students in professional development, and the tutoring center.
