The Center for Career and Professional Development (also known as The Career Studio) is excited to share several exciting new events and initiatives for the 2023-24 academic year! The Career Studio continues to be a welcoming space for the UHart community to seek career support and learn professional development skills, and we look forward to serving as a source of guidance through the channels detailed below:
- Career Ambassador Program: We have launched the 'Career Ambassador' program, for which we have welcomed a large team of new student workers ('Career Ambassadors') who will play crucial roles in supporting their peers' professional development through resume and cover letter reviews, LinkedIn and Handshake tips, prepping for an interview and more. Ambassadors will represent a wide variety of majors from across the University, ensuring that students seeking support will work with someone with similar academic and career interests.
- Appointments and Walk-in Advising: Students can set up appointments with Career Ambassadors or Career Studio staff through Compass' scheduling system. Walk-in appointments are accepted Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (late hours available by appointment).
- Workshops and Career Events: The Career Studio has created a year-long calendar of 75+ events that can be found here, 2023-24 Academic Year Career Events Calendar. Events will also be marketed through our webpage, social sites, and on the Hub.
- 'Life After College' Series: Juniors and seniors excited about post-graduate life will find comfort in these sessions intended to provide lessons to better prepare students for being independent professionals. Sessions will be held throughout the year and will span topics like Creating a Launch Plan (creating a plan for the first few years out of college), Mentor Match (working with alumni mentors in similar fields), Personal Finance and Salary Negotiation, Buying a Home, Leadership Skill Training, and others. The first event in the series, 'Life After College: Create Your Launch Plan', will take place on Monday, Sept. 25 from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m., in the Career Studio (no registration required). \
- Career and Internship Fairs: Our popular Career and Internship fairs will return in-person on Thursday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., in the GSU North and South Cafeteria. 70+ employers will be present and represent a wide range of industries including CVS Health, Connecticut Department of Transportation, Springfield Public Schools, The Hartford, Our Piece of the Pie, Eversource, Travelers, and many more. For a full list of participating employers, check Handshake.
- The Career Closet has moved to GSU: Barney Leadership Council is now working in partnership with the Career Studio to bring you professional attire. Now located at the entrance of GSU (200B). The Career Closet is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Students can borrow clothing and accessories for 14 days, or buy them at a low cost. Venmo accepted. All proceeds support the BLC.
- Workshops on Demand: Does your class or organization have some burning career or professional development questions? Let us know if you want us to come by and present on topics like LinkedIn, Handshake, Resume-Writing, General Career Studio Resources, Professional Development, Skills for Life, etc. We want to bring workshops to you!
- Partnerships with Student Groups and Clubs: Clubs and organizations on campus are encouraged to reach out to partner with us on events that will give members a boost in their professional development and career-informing experiences. Reach out to us at career@hartford.edu if you have an event in mind or want to partner on events you see on the list linked above.
- Getting in Touch with the Studio: All students, staff, and faculty can send questions to The Career Studio by emailing us at career@hartford.edu. This will ensure the fastest response time from our staff and team of ambassadors.
