Faculty Workshop on Navigating Difficult Conversations with Grace

Dr. Alexis Melville and Christina Rodriguez Simms, of Inspired Courage Counseling and Consultation, LLC, will host the workshop titled Courageous Classrooms: Navigating Difficult Conversations with Grace, on Feb. 23, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the 1877 club

Join our comprehensive 90-minute workshop focused on equipping faculty with essential tools for navigating sensitive topics effectively. Gain practical guidance on recognizing instances demanding higher intervention and explore diverse subjects, including cultural and generational differences in communication styles. Learn techniques to identify and manage emotional triggers while acquiring skills to adeptly manage discussions that may become challenging. This interactive session includes discussions and a Q&A format, accompanied by valuable handouts to enhance your learning experience.

This session is open to full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and teaching staff. It will be capped at 60 participants, so RSVP here by Feb. 5, if you plan to attend. This session is hosted by the Provost Office and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. 

Bios: 

Dr. Alexis Melville is the CEO of Inspired Courage Counseling and Consultation, LLC, and a Clinical Psychologist with an extensive background in leadership and multicultural experiences. Her commitment to diversity has been evident throughout her career. She has developed an APA-accredited multicultural-focused internship and externship program. Additionally, in response to social challenges, she played a pivotal role in forming the Black Faculty and Staff Alliance and has pioneered culturally affirming mindfulness spaces across three universities. As a former Associate Director of two university counseling centers, Director of a Training clinic, and an adjunct professor, Dr. Melville, often integrates her expertise in mental health, wellness, and social justice into her classroom and on the dissertation committees where she has served.

Christina Rodriguez Simms brings a wealth of expertise and a Master's in Social Work with two decades of dedicated service in substance use prevention, mental health, youth development, and social justice advocacy, where she has won numerous awards for her work. Christina’s innovative approach to crafting programs that boldly confront structural racism and oppression, fostering impactful change and enduring sustainability within institutions is at the core of her current role as an Educational Consultant.  As a seasoned professional with a comprehensive understanding of community needs, Christina Rodriguez Simms is a sought-after speaker, offering profound insights and practical strategies to address critical social issues, making her workshops engaging, enlightening, and instrumental in inspiring positive change.
