English Professor Bryan Sinche’s new book, Published by the Author: Self-Publication in Nineteenth-Century African American Literature, hit bookshelves this week. The book, published by the University of North Carolina Press, highlights the unique efforts of nineteenth-century Black men and women who wrote and published their own books and pamphlets. As he illuminates this aspect of African American literary history, Sinche shows how the work of little-known authors impacted the lives of nineteenth-century Black Americans and influenced the literature we still read today.
