Cheryl Hoffert, a former UHart staff member for two decades, died on May 27.
Hoffert, who served as office coordinator in the Department of Psychology, joined the University community in 1999. She also was secretary for the PreMed Committee for several years. Hoffert retired in 2020.
“The Department of Psychology has been my home for my entire academic and professional life. So many of my good memories surround Cheryl and her distinctive laugh rings in my ears," remembers Professor of Psychology Mala Matacin. “Everything she did was in support of our students and faculty. During our fall orientations and spring awards celebration, Cheryl was often credited with the work of an “unsung hero”—and she was! She was not only a colleague who supported us in our work and classes but also in our humanness.”
According to Matacin, Department of Psychology faculty and staff remember her as a beloved friend who was known for her calm, kind, gracious, thoughtful, smart and caring presence who made things right and treated others with respect.
“She loved her cats and many in the department remember hearing about their antics and swapping pet stories,” Matacin adds. “Cheryl celebrated with our collective good news and sat with us when we mourned our losses. Today, we as a community, mourn her loss.”
Calling hours will be at the New Britain Memorial Sagarino Funeral Home (444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, Conn.) on Tuesday, June 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow.
