Susan Hall Powell, a bassist with over 40 years of experience in teaching and performing who was a longtime member of The Hartt School Community Division faculty, died peacefully on July 11.
Powell joined the HCD faculty in 2007 and enjoyed teaching students from beginner to collegiate levels. She also taught at Loomis Chaffee in Windsor.
“On behalf of the HCD community, we are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our faculty member, Susan. Her passion and contributions to the music community were felt far and wide, and for that, we are extremely grateful,” says Thomas Scavone, director of the Hattt Community Division.
Powell’s love for the bass began at the age of nine in the public schools. She graduated from the Juilliard School with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance. After graduation, she embarked on a distinguished career as a freelance musician in the New York metropolitan area, quickly earning the position of principal bassist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in 1976. There, Powell also served as personnel manager and was an active member of the Philharmonic’s string quintet and wind ensemble.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
