Transition to Online Registration & Elimination of Paper Registration Forms

As part of the University's ongoing commitment to improving the student experience, we are beginning a transition away from paper-based registration processes and toward a fully online registration model.

As you know, the vast majority of our students currently register for courses through the Student Self-Service Center. Self-registration remains the gold standard for customer service, auditability, and academic integrity, as it ensures that prerequisite checking, registration permissions, and enrollment records are managed consistently and transparently.

Our goal is to expand the use of online registration tools so that, except in limited and clearly defined circumstances, students can complete their own registration online. We will begin this transition during the Fall semester with the objective of eliminating paper registration forms entirely for Spring 2027 registration, which begins in November.

Immediate Action: Online Registration Overrides

As we approach the start of the semester, we would like to remind faculty and staff that registration overrides can already be processed entirely online when a student has received instructor approval to enroll in a course that would otherwise be unavailable to them due to enrollment limits or other restrictions.

Effective immediately, faculty members are encouraged to process these overrides directly through Self-Service using the instructions available in the "Faculty Resources" card in your My UHart menu and can also be found here.

Once the override has been entered and approved online, the student will be able to complete their own registration through Self-Service.

It may be useful during this transition to prompt students to share exactly which registration errors they receive when trying to add a particular course, so that instructors are processing all necessary overrides after the initial request.

Changes to Paper Registration Processing

To support this transition, paper registration forms that are submitted solely to request routine registration overrides will no longer be accepted when the override can be completed through the online process.

We recognize that some registration scenarios, including late registrations (after the first week of classes) and registrations involving student account holds, still require additional review and coordination. Throughout the Fall semester, the Registrar's Office, ITS, Student Financial Services, and CSS will continue working together to develop and refine online solutions for these situations.

Additional information and process updates will be shared as they become available.

Thank you for your partnership and support as we modernize our registration processes and create a more efficient, student-centered registration experience.
