Soo Yeon Lyuh is a composer, improviser, and virtuoso performer of the haegeum, Korea’s traditional two-string bowed instrument. Deeply rooted in Korean court and folk traditions, Lyuh creates innovative music that bridges Korean musical aesthetics with contemporary and experimental practices, bringing the haegeum into dialogue with musicians and instruments across cultural boundaries.

Lyuh has collaborated extensively with the internationally renowned Kronos Quartet, which commissioned her acclaimed Yessori (Sound from the Past) as part of its Fifty for the Future project. The work reimagines the Western string quartet through the expressive techniques, ornamentation, and improvisatory qualities of Korean traditional music. Lyuh is a doctoral candidate in composition at Princeton University and holds BA, MA, and DMA degrees in Korean Musicology from Seoul National University. Through her international performances, compositions, and workshops, she continues to build connections between Korean traditional music and contemporary global musical practices. This program is presented in conjunction with Professor Ju-Yong Ha’s courses World Music Survey, Global Pop Music, and Perspectives on Music History and is open to the University community.
