The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Belonging invites you to join us for The Connection on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. Formerly known as Professional Development, The Connection provides our campus community with meaningful ways to explore new ideas, grow, and strengthen our connection. This program will feature Xiuhtezcatl (X) Martinez, an Indigenous environmental activist, recording artists, and author.
This program is open to all UHart students, faculty, and staff.

Meet Xiuhtezcatl Martinez
Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is an Indigenous environmental activist, recording artist, and author. While growing up, he protested against the fossil fuel industry in his Colorado community and became the youngest person to address the United Nations General Assembly on the topic of climate change. Grounded in his Indigenous Xochilmica roots, Xiuhtezcatl’s activism and music is grounded in his lived experience growing up in a working-class, immigrant household.
Xiuhtezcatl has delivered speeches at over 100 conferences, institutions and schools across the world, and his two books, We Rise and Imaginary Borders, are taught in thousands of classrooms. He has made hundreds of press appearances, including on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Real Time with Bill Mahr, PBS Newshour, CNN, MSNBC and Univision. He holds dozens of awards and is listed on TIME Magazine’s “30 Under 30 List” and Rolling Stone’s “25 Under 25.”
