The Anatomy Club is excited to host a special research seminar on Friday, Nov. 13 featuring Dr. Ivana Kawikova, adjunct professor at the University of Hartford and a Merit Fellow co-funded by the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, NIMH in Czechia, and the Central Bohemian Innovation Center.

What can biology tell us about mental illness beyond the brain? Dr. Kawikova’s research explores the biological foundations of psychiatric disorders, including Tourette syndrome, autism, and schizophrenia. In her talk, “Beyond the Brain: The New Biology of Mental Illness,” she will discuss the complexities and challenges of psychiatric research and how advances in biological sciences are shaping our understanding of mental health.

Dr. Kawikova earned her MD in Prague, completed her PhD in Sweden, and pursued postdoctoral research at Yale University. She will also share insights from her international research journey and highlight diverse career opportunities in psychiatric research and beyond.

This seminar is ideal for students interested in anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, biomedical research, medicine, or health-related careers. All are welcome, and no prior research experience is required!

Come explore the fascinating connections between biology and mental health, and learn about the exciting research and career opportunities in this evolving field from 1 p.m.–2 p.m. in Dana Hall 236 on Friday, Nov. 13.
