CETA Speaker Series to Explore Digital Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing

The University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) will host its first speaker series event of the 2026–27 academic year on Monday, Nov. 2 from 4 p.m.  to 6 p.m. The event will introduce students to emerging digital engineering practices and their growing role in advanced manufacturing.

The event will feature an interactive workshop, “Model-Based Definition & the Digital Thread: Beyond the Blueprint,” exploring how product information moves from design through manufacturing and inspection using connected digital data.

During the hands-on workshop, students will learn about Model-Based Engineering (MBE), Model-Based Definition (MBD), and the digital thread. Through real-world examples and discussion, participants will examine how 3D models can communicate information traditionally included in 2D engineering drawings and how connected digital practices are transforming industries such as aerospace, defense, and medical manufacturing.

Students will also explore how digital models can improve communication, reduce errors, and support better decision-making across engineering and manufacturing teams. The session will highlight the value of understanding model-based engineering and connected product data for students preparing to enter technical careers.

Following the workshop, attendees will hear from two representatives of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT): Eileen Candels, who works in professional development, and James Brino, senior technical trainer and curriculum and training manager. Brino is also a University of Hartford alumnus, having earned both his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in acoustics, and his MBA at UHart. He maintains his connection to the University as an adjunct professor of management in the Barney School of Business, where he teaches Operations Management.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in East Hartford, CCAT is a nonprofit organization that helps manufacturers adopt advanced technologies and strengthen their capabilities. Through applied engineering expertise, hands-on training, technology demonstrations, and industry partnerships, the organization supports workforce development and manufacturing innovation across Connecticut and beyond.

The CETA Speaker Series offers students opportunities to connect classroom learning with industry expertise, explore emerging technologies, and learn about career opportunities in engineering and advanced manufacturing.
