General Classes

This program is designed for permanent residents and other non-F1 students who need English as a Second Language for everyday life, such as for their jobs, classes, households, travel, etc. By the end of the program, students will:

  • have a firm grasp of communicating in English on a broad range of topics for everyday life.
  • have an advanced ability to create complex grammatical structures.
  • have the ability to express abstract ideas, opinions, and processes in both written and spoken English.
  • have the ability to use written English in a variety of general practices, such as crafting emails, official requests, or answering open-ended questions.

There are 3 levels of General Classes: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. These classes run for 4 hours a week for 12 weeks. At this time, general courses are only provided in the evening from 5:00-7:00pm, twice a week.

Tuition: $616

Academic classes

These classes are designed to prepare students for the specifics of English in an academic setting. Students will learn the communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to engage and thrive in their university classes. The classes will also prepare students for the responsibilities and expectations of being in a Western-style university. These lessons will focus on how to be a successful student in the U.S. and will emphasize the differences in teaching styles between the U.S. and the student’s native country.

Any student who completes the full-time academic program will have their English test requirement waived at the University of Hartford.

There are three different academic programs. Depending on enrollment, each program will have their own cohorts. These cohorts will be designed to fit the needs of each individual program. The information for each program is below:

I have lived some of the best moments in my life studying in the University of Hartford. It’s a great opportunity to live with people from other cultures. … It’s pretty cool to know that my year abroad wasn't only for learning English, it was also a great experience to learn about other cultures, and grow into a better person.
