Outstanding Alum: Early Career Professional
Shanell Farmer-Rowe has built a career on turning strategic partnerships into measurable, lasting impact for the communities she serves. A Brooklyn native, she majored in communications and minored in business administration at UHart, building an early foundation in public relations, advertising, and business leadership, strengths she now channels into expanding meaningful opportunity for children in underserved communities nationwide.
Today, Farmer-Rowe serves as Director of Strategic Alliances at First Book, a national nonprofit that has distributed over 225 million books and educational resources to more than 600,000 educators nationwide.
While at UHart, she held top leadership roles in many campus organizations, including Strong Independent Sisters, the Women's Advancement Initiative, and its Leadership Education and Development program.
After UHart, Farmer-Rowe pursued finance and strategy at George Washington University, earning an MBA in investment and portfolio management as a Forte Fellow, and serving on the boards of the GW Graduate Finance Society and National Black MBA Association. She continues her engagement with the university community through the GW UK Alumni Committee.
Her post-MBA path led to venture capital work, contributing to deal sourcing, investment thesis development, and institutional-grade due diligence. She is passionate about backing early-stage founders and applying that rigor to social impact.
A lover of life in every sense, Farmer-Rowe is an avid traveler who has explored 24 countries, driven by curiosity and a hunger for growth. She brings that same energy to a ballet studio, an Xtreme Hip Hop class, and her kitchen, perfecting her sourdough one rise at a time.
