Be a Savvy Small Contractor. Engage in our clinics and access resources today!
Small contractors face unique challenges and issues:
- Contract readiness
- Lean management and lean office
- Bonding and financing
- How to follow up with general contractors
- Marketing and more
The Small Contractor Development Program identifies points where contractors need help then focuses intense training and technical assistance in those areas. Offering academies and clinics throughout the year, many of the classes are taught by local general contractors in addition to Center advisors. Because of this close connection to the construction industry, the program helps small contractors to make connections with general contractors and resource partners through:
- CT Business Matchmaker
- Service Centers
This program is run in conjunction with The Metropolitan District (MDC). Partners include the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), CT Construction Industries Assoc. (CCIA), and the National Assoc. of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
Success Story: If you love what you do, why change?

The road to becoming an entrepreneur and business owner usually has a lot of twists and turns. Yahaira Rodriguez knows that well. She comes from a background in human services, holding an associate’s degree in the field and working in shelters and group homes for more than a dozen years.
In 2018, she decided she wanted to do something different with her life—but it wasn’t exactly clear to her what that would be. She thought that would mean leaving human services work behind. However, the Women’s Business Center assisted her to create a business doing the work she enjoys, directly helping people with intellectual disabilities.
