Nursing Leader to Speak on Health Care Needs of the LGBTQIA+ Community on Dec. 3

December 03, 2019

The College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP) will host Vanessa Pomarico-Denino for a lecture titled “Expanding the Rainbow: Understanding the Health Care Needs of the LGBTQIA+ Community” on Tuesday, December 3 from 5-7 p.m.

The lecture will take place at Wilde Auditorium and is free and open to the public. The event is part of the ENHP Dean’s Lecture Series.

Pomarico-Denino, EdD, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP, is a senior lecturer for Fitzgerald Health Education Associates and is employed by Northeast Medical Group in Hamden, Conn., specializing in internal medicine with a special interest in women’s health and LGBTQIA+ health care. An author, educator, volunteer, and nursing leader, she is lead clinician for the diversity and inclusion committee and is the system-wide trainer for Northeast Medical Group on LGBTQIA+ health care.

The LGBTQIA+ population has evolved over the past several years to include other gender non-conforming and gender minority populations. The individual needs of each population within this acronym vary, and as a result, specialized and focused care must be directed to each group in order to meet their health care needs.

These gender and sexual minorities still encounter issues concerning sexuality, identity, gender and freedom of expression with their health care providers. It is a well-documented fact that the majority of health care providers today have not been properly educated on how to care for this population; therefore, the specific needs pertaining to each individual group represented in this acronym go largely ignored. This lecture will focus the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ community to promote patient-centered care.

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the appropriate language used when caring for the diverse and sexual minority patient populations
  • Explain the differences between the populations within the LGBTQIA+ acronym
  • Create appropriate, affirming and welcoming patient experiences
  • Understand the need for organizational policies regarding care for this population

Pomarico-Denino is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Nightingale award, AANP Nurse Practitioner Excellence Award, the Northeast Medical Group/YNHH Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Award, and the “All In Award” for her efforts in educating providers on the appropriate health care for the LGBTQIA+ patient. She is a national expert on a variety of topics and has presented at numerous state and national conferences but most notably for LGBTQIA+ health care.
