One of the highest academically achieving classes to arrive at the University of Hartford in recent years, alongside a strong incoming group of transfer students, began its college journey over move-in weekend, Aug. 20–23. With an average GPA of 3.45, the Class of 2030 brings an impressive range of accomplishments as National Honor Society members; All-State musicians, performers, and artists; varsity captains and state champions; scientists and engineers; community service and social justice champions; student journalists; and much more.
The incoming students kicked off their time on campus with signature weekend events including Start Strong Adventures, the annual block party hosted by the Hartford Events and Activities Team, and the annual “Big H” photo featuring members of the incoming class.

Academically Driven and Career Focused
The Class of 2030 has distinguished itself not only through its academic credentials, but also through the ambitious fields of study students have chosen to pursue. The incoming class is enrolling in large numbers across programs known for their academic rigor and strong career outcomes, including nursing, architecture, psychology, radiologic technology, business analytics, physical therapy, music theatre, mechanical engineering, and more.
Combined with the highest incoming first-year average GPA in recent years, these enrollment trends point to a class that is deeply engaged, highly motivated, and eager to take advantage of UHart's hands-on approach to learning.
The undergraduate class represents students from 34 states and 14 countries, bringing a broad range of experiences and perspectives to campus. At the same time, more than 50 percent of incoming students are Connecticut residents, reinforcing the University's longstanding commitment to educating and retaining talented professionals who will contribute to the state's future workforce in healthcare, engineering, business, education, the arts, and other high-demand fields. UHart also welcomed more than 100 new transfer students, bringing diverse academic backgrounds and experiences that further enrich the campus community.
That same spirit of academic ambition is reflected across the University's incoming graduate student population. This fall, graduate students are pursuing advanced degrees in some of UHart's most sought-after programs, including the MBA, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Master of Education in Special Education. The new graduate cohort includes students from 39 states and 18 countries, while more than 300 students call Connecticut home. Their enrollment reflects both the University's growing national reach and its continued role in advancing the careers of professionals across the region.
The University's graduate programs have also expanded opportunities for students through six new Education Alliance partnerships established over the past two years, including collaborations with New Haven Public Schools and Hanwha Aerospace, creating pathways for workforce development, professional advancement, and community impact.

A Moment of Momentum
The Class of 2030 arrives at a moment of growth for the University of Hartford, with multi-million-dollar investments in the student experience—including new programs, upgraded academic spaces, and bold new areas for dining, gathering, sports, and recreation.
This fall, the University will cut the ribbon on a new $2.4 million outdoor athletics and recreation center named in honor of UHart basketball legend Vin Baker. Featuring outdoor tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts, the complex will allow UHart to expand its rapidly growing club and intramural sports offerings. It will also provide additional training and competition space for the University’s intercollegiate NCAA Division III student-athletes.
Also to open this fall is UHart’s newest dining and gathering destination, The Landing. With spacious indoor and outdoor dining areas and a large brick pizza oven, the $2.8 million project will feature UHart’s take on Connecticut’s favorite comfort foods. An outdoor patio and pond area—with indoor performance capabilities—will serve as a venue for student-centered events. Meanwhile, the former Hawk’s Nest dining facility has been transformed into a centrally located residential market, The Nest.
In addition to those high-visibility projects, other significant shifts are taking place in the academic experience. The University recently welcomed a new provost, Nancy LaGreca, and a new dean of the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, Kristin Landis-Piwowar. The University also recently held a ribbon joining to celebrate the formation of the Hillyer College of Arts and Sciences. This merger of two of UHart’s colleges—which took effect July 1 after an intentional, multi-year transition process—is designed to pair the academic depth of a liberal arts college with the personalized support Hillyer has always exemplified.
Much of that support will be provided by UHart’s new Hawk Advantage program. It will offer small classes—no more than 15 students—and greater peer support to students who need it, along with workshops focused on study strategies, time management, and effective learning.
“When we give students smaller classes, closer mentorship, and the practical tools to manage their time and their studies, we're not just helping them get through college — we're helping them build habits that will serve them for life,” President Lawrence P. Ward shares.
The University has also completed a flurry of other projects designed to enhance the student experience, including new spaces for its growing communication, architecture, and cinema programs. And a project to revitalize and beautify the area along Park River continues, transforming it into a tranquil oasis for students to study, relax, and enjoy.
