Jeffrey Severino at Internship

Jeffrey Severino ’19, BSME with acoustic and computational concentrations, has set the example for many students, as he works towards a dream career with NASA.

Severino’s experience as a student in CETA can inspire so many others. When he first joined the University of Hartford, he was unsure which direction he wanted to take his engineering career. After being encouraged by a few other CETA students and faculty, Severino was introduced to the opportunity to intern with NASA. Many CETA mechanical engineering faculty like Professor Ivana Milanovic emphasize just how competitive NASA internships are. Severino not only interned with NASA for one summer, but two. After his graduation, he continued working on his aero-acoustical research with NASA and is currently pursuing graduate school.

Without the encouragement of members within CETA, I wouldn’t have gained an interest or opportunity to pursue research and truly apply myself outside of the classroom. Through my experiences at the University of Hartford as a whole, I’m excited to embark on this next chapter and pursue a rewarding career with NASA.

Over the summer of 2019, Severino returned to the Acoustic Branch and the Bio-inspired Acoustic Absorber Team at NASA Glenn Research Center where he resumed work that he started the summer prior. According to L. Danielle Koch, M.S., P.E., Aerospace Engineer in the Acoustics Branch at NASA Glenn Research Center, he exceeded their expectations once again. In particular, he showed initiative all throughout the summer, choosing to attend extra training courses and special events. He won an award for Best Overall Solution in the NASA GRC Internship Student Design Challenge, entitled ‘Navigating NASA GRC.’ Furthermore, his mid-term presentation made it into the “Top 40” of the Glenn Talks Live event.
