Anthony Senseman ’23 is a junior double majoring in finance and mathematics. Last summer he was presented with the opportunity to Intern with The Hartford, and this summer he stepped up to the role of investment portfolio management intern at Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO). He is also the co-founder of the student-initiated Q² Project at the University of Hartford, and a dedicated member of the Barney Leadership Council.

Internship Experience

At The Hartford,  Anthony worked in the enterprise risk management department, where he leveraged the skills he acquired at the Barney School of Business. While at the firm he successfully  optimized what is known as a probability weighting framework, and as a result his methods were adopted by the company. That positively impacted future reserves on The Hartford’s balance sheet. “I learned how important it is to be able to quantitatively analyze a problem and communicate the results succinctly,” Anthony explains.

Networking proved to be one of the most important parts of his summer experience. “I learned that the best thing I could do for myself is build as many professional connections as I can, and grow my network through every experience,” he says

Leadership

In addition to a great learning experience through his internship,  being a co-founder of Q²  allowed him to excel as a leader. Other students look to him for guidance, and he was called upon to be a leader during competitive projects.. These helped Anthony  refine both his interpersonal  and technical skills, such as computer programming to evaluate potential investment strategies. He appreciates Barney’s “tight-knit community and endless opportunities to be a leader both in and out of the classroom. I was able to pioneer applied learning initiatives, which wouldn’t have been possible at many other institutions.”

Anthony stresses that students should say  yes to every leadership opportunity that comes their way. “Don’t be afraid to put the work in,” he advises. “Now is the time to apply yourself and push the boundaries of what you are capable of.”

After Anthony graduates in 2023, he hopes to enter the financial world   in a front-office role at an investment firm. This will allow him to apply his analytical skillset to his passion for financial markets and investing.

The Barney school taught me how to build a professional network, and the importance of being career ready. I was given the opportunity to ask as many questions as I needed, and to pick the brains of professors to develop a true understanding of the subjects at hand.
