DPT Student is Well Prepared for a Career After Graduation

Jenna Atlas

Jenna Atlas ’21 M’24 is currently pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) after completing her undergraduate degree in health science with a pre-physical therapy track here at the University of Hartford. Through the DPT program, students have the opportunity to acquire theoretical knowledge and clinical skills used in contemporary physical therapy practice, participate in integrated clinical experiences throughout the curriculum, and develop a commitment to research, clinical reasoning, and critical thinking. These aspects of the program are helping to prepare Jenna for a career after graduation. “I really appreciate that our program gets us out into the clinics in our first year of DPT education. This allows us to see how real patients are presenting, apply the knowledge we have learned thus far, and engage with licensed physical therapists and their treatments.”

The Hursey Center, which opened in 2021, features state-of-the-art laboratories that students like Jenna can take advantage of. Through interactive hands-on learning in these spaces, DPT students can participate in practice settings and then bring what they learn into their clinical practice. In addition to the incredible learning spaces for students, Jenna credits the faculty for being extremely supportive of their students, encouraging them to pursue open lab times and office hours.

When reflecting upon her UHart experience as both an undergraduate and graduate student, support and leadership come to mind. She was able to pursue opportunities for leadership in both her academics and extracurricular clubs. Seeking out professional relationships with faculty have contributed to Jenna’s success and growth as a student. One of her favorite memories in her time here is the Physical Therapy Spirit week in which students in the DPT program dress up for different themes each day and compete in competitions against other cohorts and faculty. She says “It’s a great way to be goofy, show off your competitive side, and build relationships with faculty and other students in the program.”

Jenna’s advice to students considering the program is “Come on campus and take a tour and sign up to talk to current DPT students about their experiences. I always recommend students make sure to set a "hard cap" for yourself when it comes to studying and homework. In a doctorate level program, it will always feel like there is more work to be done. However, breaks from studying are so important! Refuel yourself, spend time with friends, move your body, eat some good food, and make sure you balance your work with the other things that fill your cup!”

I really appreciate that our program gets us out into the clinics in our first year of DPT education. This allows us to see how real patients are presenting, apply the knowledge we have learned thus far, and engage with licensed physical therapists and their treatments.”
