For Tamira Whaley M'26, earning her master of education at the University of Hartford was a natural next step in a career dedicated to supporting students with diverse learning needs.
Having worked in education for most of her life, Whaley enrolled in UHart's graduate education program to advance her career as a special education teacher while continuing to make a difference in the classroom.
"The encouragement and support I received at UHart helped me grow both personally and professionally," she says.
Before graduating in 2026, Whaley had already advanced her career and now teaches special education at Smith Elementary School in New Britain, Connecticut. She credits the program with strengthening her knowledge and giving her practical skills she uses every day with her students.
Through her internship experiences, Whaley gained valuable hands-on learning that complemented her coursework and prepared her for the challenges of today's classrooms.
"I learned so much through the hands-on experience," she says.
The relationships she built with faculty also had a lasting impact. She especially appreciates the support she received from Professor Chris Stuck and the special education faculty throughout the program.
"They were always there, even when they didn't need to be," Whaley says. "They are a true inspiration to the profession."
Although she completed her degree online, one of her favorite memories was visiting UHart's campus and meeting the faculty and staff in person.
As she continues her work as a special education teacher, Whaley applies the strategies and classroom knowledge she gained at UHart to help her students succeed every day.
Her advice for future Hawks? "It's never too late, and never ever give up on your dreams."
