Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Lisa Zawilinski, Associate Professor of Education, has been selected to be the next Executive Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation.  Lisa will build on the solid foundation built by CTEI inaugural director, Jean McGivney Burelle.  Lisa has been active in the areas of faculty development, pedagogical innovation, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for many years and some of you may know her. The rest of you are in for a treat.

Lisa joined the faculty of the University of Hartford in 2011 as an Assistant Professor of Education and was granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2017. She holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, a master's degree in Reading Instruction, and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, all from the University of Connecticut.

First and foremost, Lisa is a teacher, whether her “students” are undergraduates, graduate students, or faculty peers. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Education and, as an enthusiastic student of both pedagogy and educational technology, has been a frequent presenter for the Faculty Center for Learning Development and for CTEI. She has also played a leadership role in two important university grants, both from the Davis Family Foundation. She was part of the leadership team for the Flipping the Classroom grant and is currently serving as Co-PI on a grant focused on building faculty capacity for High Impact Practices through Learning Communities. She is a trained reviewer in our Peer Review of Teaching program and a frequent informal consultant on getting the most out of technology.

Lisa has held a series of positions with increasing leadership responsibilities in the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions. She was the assessment coordinator for the Department of Education from 2014-19, chair or co-chair of the Department of Education since 2018, and is currently serving as associate dean for Graduate Studies in the college. Lisa’s scholarship includes book chapters, refereed journal articles, and peer reviewed presentations. Her work spans the Scholarships of Discovery, Application, and Teaching and Learning.

I want to thank the search committee for their efforts: Jim Shattuck, associate provost for Undergraduate Studies; Mark Snyder, associate professor and associate dean in the Hartford Art School, Julie Sochacki, associate professor of English Education, and T Stores, assistant provost and dean of Faculty Development, as well as all those who applied.

Please join me in congratulating Lisa on this new appointment.

Sincerely,
H. Frederick Sweitzer
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
