What: Juneteenth known by many as Black Independence Day or Freedom Day
Time of Reflection and Unity is a call to gather with community members, to celebrate the fundamental truth that all people are created equal and liberty is a right endowed by our creator.

Why: To celebrate, reflect and commit to equality and justice for all
History: *Juneteenth refers to the final emancipation of slaves in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1,1863, however, it was not enforced in Texas until June 19, 1865. U.S. Army Officer and Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation and announced their freedom to Texas's enslaved African-Americans on June 19, 1865.
