On Friday, April 23, Fairfield University Professor and AAUP National President Irene Mulvey met with the AAUP Advocacy Chapter at the University of Hartford. In a wide-ranging discussion with the chapter, Dr. Mulvey highlighted the importance of shared governance and the responsibilities of university professors in ensuring that institutions remain true to their principles.

In particular, Dr. Mulvey explained that university faculty need to have authentic representation—meaning that the faculty select their own representatives—at all levels of university decision making, and that representatives need to be able to report back to their constituents. Dr. Mulvey also pointed out that university professors need to stand for tenure and academic freedom and resist all administrative efforts to expand the number of contingent (e.g., adjunct, NTT, CAT, and “teaching”) faculty at the institution.

The University of Hartford AAUP advocacy chapter is committed to realizing these goals through a democratically run, faculty focused organization.
