Maria Feeley has accepted a new position at Washington and Lee University, her law school alma mater, as chief legal officer and general counsel.

She has served the UHart community for more than four years as vice president, board secretary, and general counsel. In September 2019, Feeley took on the additional role of interim director of athletics.

“Maria has stepped up to take on a number of responsibilities during her tenure,” said President Gregory Woodward. “She has significantly contributed to the strategic advancement of several areas across the University and we are proud to see her advance her career with a new and personally meaningful opportunity.”

During her tenure, the Office of General Counsel has achieved multiple successes, including the closing of a $132 million public bond offering that resulted in substantial improvements to campus and student life; establishment and oversight of an Office of Equal Opportunity and Equal Employment Opportunity Programs; reorganization of the Title IX Office; and the restructuring of the Enterprise Risk Management Committee and Compliance Committee.

In Feeley’s 20 months as the interim AD, the Department of Athletics launched a varsity Esports program; hired its first diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officer; established an Athletics DEI Committee and related initiatives; strengthened its Athletics Compliance Department; and celebrated the men’s basketball program’s first-ever America East conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

“While it was a difficult decision to leave behind the great people with whom I have had the pleasure of working, I look forward to my next chapter as chief legal officer and general counsel for Washington and Lee University, my law school alma mater,” said Feeley. “I wish the University, all my colleagues, and the student body the best.”

Feeley’s last day will be Aug. 6. The University will share transition plans and updates with the campus community soon.
