What is Binge Drinking?

Binge drinking is consuming an excessive amount of alcohol in a short amount of time. It is generally done for the purpose of becoming intoxicated. It is usually defined as consuming 5 or more drinks in two hours for men, and 4 or more drinks in two hours for women. The highest rate of binge drinking is among adults ages 18-25.

How can Binge Drinking affect my Health?

Alcohol is a drug, and therefore heavy use may eventually lead to alcoholism or alcohol use disorders. Consuming too much alcohol can cause alcohol poisoning, which may be fatal in some circumstances. Some diseases linked with binge drinking include: heart disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, and cancer.

What about Injuries?

Being highly intoxicated makes it more likely for someone to be injured or killed when operating vehicles or heavy machinery. Binge drinking also makes individuals more likely to be injured from tripping or hitting their head.

Over 80,000 people die each year in the US from binge drinking. Injuries and poor decision-making cost lives.
