Employment Manual Chapter Change Summary

January 11, 2022
Submitted By: Jen Conley

Two chapters in the Employment Manual have recently been updated. These changes were initiated by discussions with Staff Council, the Benefits Task Force, and Senior Administration.

1.01, Emergency Procedures

Emergency Campus closings, specifically the ‘snow days’ policy has reverted to the previous policy that was in place prior to the Dec. 2020 update.

Removed from Emergency Campus Closing:

Staff in jobs that are able to work from home and equipped from home are expected to continue business operations/functions and work their normal schedule in the event of an emergency campus closing, including closings for inclement weather. Staff who choose not to work from home in the event of an emergency campus closing, including inclement weather, will be required to use personal and/or vacation time, or be unpaid if their time off banks are exhausted.

Staff who are unable to work from home (due to the nature of their positions or due to interruption of utilities, such as power or internet) during an emergency campus closing may record their time as “University Close.”

5.05, Bereavement Days

The Bereavement Days policy has been expanded to include an increased number of paid bereavement days. The policy has been written to provide greater clarity for those who may need to utilize this time.

  • Five days of missed work time granted for an immediate family member which includes, parent, child, sibling, grandchild or spouse/domestic partner
  • Three days of missed work time granted for a close family member which includes parent-in-law, grandparent, son-in-law, or daughter-in-law
  • One day of missed work time granted for a relative beyond the definitions above to include aunt or uncle, niece or nephew, brother-in-law or sister-in-law, or a spouse’s grandparent.

The Employment Manual can be accessed by logging into your Employee Self-Service account under the ‘Employee’ tab.

HRD will continue to ensure that the most current version of the Employment Manual is available on Employee Self Service. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact hrd@hartford.edu.
