Students from across the state who participated in Fox 61’s student news program received honors and awards in a recent ceremony at the University of Hartford, as well as brand new scholarships to the College of Arts & Sciences.

The Student News awards have been held for years at UHart by Fox 61, but the University’s scholarship component was brand new for 2022: Middle and high school students who won in the eight categories each earned $5,000 scholarships to pursue their educational goals if they are accepted to and attend the College of Arts & Sciences.

For the past 30 years, the Fox 61 program has enabled students across Connecticut to create broadcast news stories that are aired during the channel’s news shows.

While students were on campus for the June 1 ceremony, emceed by Fox 61 co-anchor Keith McGilvery, they also toured the University’s TV production studio and heard from Jack Banks, director of the School of Communication and Cinema Program. (Interview link)

“We want to encourage that passion you have for reporting the news and features in case you’d like to continue this as a career,” Banks told the crowd of nearly 100 students. “You are exactly the kind of motivated students we’d like to have here at Hartford in our media and communication programs.”
